The Suncoast Boulevard Revitalisation Project aims to provide a framework for the detailed design and construction of key streetscape elements, staged over future years subject to funding.

Project scope

The Suncoast Boulevard Revitalisation Project will:

  • give priority to pedestrians and cyclists through the installation of traffic calming devices and improved pedestrian crossing opportunities
  • create a shady beachside atmosphere with the installation of trees and planted seating areas
  • create an attractive, safe and connected coastal village centre, that is a focus for the community and tourist activities.

Project update

The Suncoast Boulevard Streetscape Plan is a three stage project:

  • Stage 1 is now complete (work was conducted in late 2011).
  • Stage 2 starts soon (July 2012 - January 2013).
  • Stage 3 is scheduled for 2018 (subject to future funding and Department of Main Roads' approval).

Where to from here

Stage 2 construction finished early January 2013.

Stage 2 work included:

  • the permanent closure of the eastern end of Lexie Street to create a new 'Marcoola Village Square'. The square will include new street furniture such as seating, bicycle parking and a drinking fountain along with turfed areas, natural shade (from trees), lighting, new gardens, native tree planting and integrated public artwork.
  • widening the footpath areas along the western (trader) side of David Low Way
  • new kerb and channelling along the western side of David Low Way
  • relocating above-ground power to underground power
  • stormwater drainage upgrades
  • public seating
  • retaining walls
  • access stairs and ramps (for disabled and pram access)
  • road lighting upgrades
  • street tree planting and gardens
  • public art
  • a new, planted centre median strip on David Low Way
  • new asphalt (bitumen) overlay to the western side of David Low Way.

Stage 1 was completed in December 2011 which involved the construction of the Rex Terrace roundabout as shown in the plan of the Rex Terrace/Suncoast Boulevard roundabout.

Council invited the community to provide feedback on the displayed draft concept plan throughout Marcoola, Mudjimba and Pacific Paradise over the 2009 Christmas holiday period. The majority of community feedback supported the project. Council has reviewed the feedback and has progressed to the design development stage.

The design development focuses on sections of the Revised Concept Plan and has enabled construction work to start.
