A team of young locals aged from 13 to 25 has been selected to help the Sunshine Coast Council deliver youth-friendly services and programs.
Community Engagement and Governance Portfolio holder Christian Dickson said the 13 Youth Coordinators, known as the YTEAM, represented communities across the region, from Caloundra to Cooroy.
“They have a wide range of experiences, interests and backgrounds that leave them well equipped to advise council on how best to meet the needs of young residents,” Councillor Dickson said.
“They were chosen after council called for public expressions of interest in the project, and because they showed a keen interest in taking a leadership role in improving council’s services for their peers,” he said.
“This project positions young people as the experts of their own cultures, experiences and needs.”
Their appointment is part of an action research project called Change Your World – funded by the Department of Communities – which will give the 13 Youth Coordinators an opportunity to undertake training in community engagement techniques.
Armed with their new skills, the coordinators will run youth-focused engagement projects across the Coast to identify the needs, experiences and interests of young people living in coast and hinterland communities.
The outcomes of the project will result in the creation of:
- A Youth Engagement Framework that will guide council on how to better involve young people in decision-making processes
- Research data that will be used to inform a Youth Strategy focusing on the priorities for programs, policies and council’s role in supporting young people.
The Youth Coordinators are:
Paul Barnes, 25, Maroochydore
Taylah Boultbee, 13, Sippy Downs
Melanie Dion, 24, Mt Coolum
