A municipal government delegation from Xiamen in China has visited the Sunshine Coast today to gain a greater understanding of the trade and investment opportunities of interest to the two regions.

A major city on China’s south-east coast, Xiamen has had a Friendship City agreement with the former Maroochy Shire Council and current Sunshine Coast Council since 1999.

Cr Jenny McKay, who has developed strong linkages with the Xiamen Foreign Affairs Office and has been honoured with honorary citizen status, welcomed the delegation on behalf of Sunshine Coast Council.

Today’s visit by the six-member delegation featured a tour of the Sunshine Coast, including visits to the Kawana Health Precinct and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

“This is a great opportunity for representatives of the Xiamen municipal government to learn more about our Sunshine Coast economy to enhance our trade, tourism and education links,” Cr McKay said.

“We’ve been holding discussions to explore the opportunities that may be available for broadening bilateral cooperation and exploring the potential for a talent exchange between the two regions.”

Cr McKay recently led a small business delegation to Xiamen to attend the China International Fair for Investment and Trade.

“One of the big success stories out of our efforts to foster greater trade with China has been with Glenview-based company Radaqua which has completed an aquaculture project in one of the world’s largest seafood consuming countries,” Cr McKay said.

“In addition to the Xiamen municipal government delegation visit today, a business delegation will be here on the Sunshine Coast in November to explore trade partnership opportunities with local Sunshine Coast agribusiness exporters.

“Council will be facilitating the program for the business delegation.”
