Sunshine Coast Council is calling for nominations from visionary volunteers who would like to be part of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve management team.
The management team, the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Governance Board will manage the promotion and advancement of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve for conservation, sustainable development, research and education.
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor, Bob Abbot said biosphere status is presented only to areas that demonstrate innovative approaches to conservation, sustainable development and governance through partnerships with local people.
“When Council voted for the creation of this board it voted for partnership with the community, working with individuals who can think strategically and holistically about sustainable issues,” he said.
In September 2007 the former Noosa Shire was listed as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO under its Man and the Biosphere Program. The announcement was a coup for Noosa, and now the Sunshine Coast Region and Queensland as Noosa became the first area in the state to receive biosphere status
The Board will be supported by the community sector boards, Tourism Noosa, Sunshine Coast Councillors Brennan and Green, and a secretariat and working group from Council.
Nominations are invited for vacancies on the five community boards and for three community director positions of the Noosa Biosphere Governance Board. Service on the boards is honorary and members will be appointed for their skills and experience.
Nominations close Friday, 6 June 2008. Nomination forms and detailed information can be downloaded from www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/noosabiospherereserve are available from Helen Gregory, phone 07 5449 5122
