A $1.5 million makeover for the region’s premier junior rugby league facility at Wises Road, Maroochydore will be officially opened before the Rugby League Sunshine Coast A-grade grand final on Saturday night.
Players, their families and other spectators have welcomed the significant upgrade which includes new grandstand seating and shade, two changerooms, a first aid room and referees’ room, and pathways.
Mayor Mark Jamieson, who will join councillors and club representatives to officially open the upgraded complex, said council constructed the upgrade in partnership with the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing.
“These much improved facilities are going to provide a better experience for the players, their families and friends” Mayor Jamieson said.
“The tiered seating is going to be fantastic for spectators who come to watch the action, providing improved comfort and all-weather protection, and the upgraded changerooms meet minimum state competition standards.”
Division 7 Councillor Ted Hungerford said the upgrade was part of council’s long-term plan for the Wises Road site.
“This six hectare district sport and recreation precinct is home to many local sporting clubs and provides open space for formal and informal recreation to promote health and wellbeing,” Cr Hungerford said.
“Better facilities will help the clubs encourage more people to get active and play sport including Oztag, touch and gridiron, and will also help the region attract additional higher level competition events.”
The Facility Development Plan for Maroochydore Junior Rugby League Club was adopted by council in 2014 as part of the Sunshine Coast Sport and Active Recreation Plan 2011 – 2026.
Funding for the makeover included divisional funding from Cr Hungerford and Cr John Connolly, and equal funds from council’s Capital Works Program and The Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing.
