The four Destination Desk Advisory Panel Chairs to Sunshine Coast Destinations Ltd (SCDL) have unanimously agreed to sign off on the Draft Sunshine Coast Destination Limited Business Plan 2011/2012.
At Sunshine Coast Council’s last Budget meeting of 16 May, council resolved to withhold distribution of tourism levy funds to SCDL for the 2011/2012 fiscal year conditional upon all Destination Desk Panels reaching formal agreement to a final business plan for the next financial year.
Today's signing-off on the Business Plan triggers that funding to be endorsed in the forthcoming budget.
Mayor Bob Abbot said he was very pleased the issue had been resolved quickly.
"SCDL is a new organisation, and while it has already achieved some great successes, it is still in its fledgling state," he said.
"Council is strongly committed to its ongoing success. We are only too aware of the importance of tourism to the Coast, particularly in these difficult economic times, as one of the three current pillars of our economy.
"I congratulate all parties in coming together to move past this hurdle."
Cr Abbot also congratulated SCDL and industry partners on its winning of the right to host the 35th Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) Symposium on the Sunshine Coast, to be held from 1 to 4 May, 2012.
The ATEC Symposium is the largest conference on the national tourism industry calendar, and attracts more than 500 representatives of the Australian Tourism Export Industry, travel specialists and tourism operators.
"This great news follows on from the Coast successfully hosting 89 national and international journalists and media representatives, resulting in considerable coverage that would be impossible for the industry to directly pay for," the Mayor said.
Council and SCDL will shortly announce names of new appointees to the SCDL chair and the board.
