Travelling on Buccleugh Street, Moffat Beach, is now far more comfortable after the completion of the new Tooway Bridge.
The $5.2 million construction includes a boardwalk beneath the southern end of the bridge linking Kingsford Smith Parade from east to west, enabling pedestrians a safer crossing of Buccleugh Street.
Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said replacing the former Tooway timber bridge was an essential project that had involved extensive community consultation.
“The old timber bridge had suffered structural fatigue and this new construction has overcome that problem and provided a safe and visually pleasing new bridge to improve car and pedestrian travel,” he said.
“Replacing the bridge was a challenging project that impacted local businesses, schools, emergency services, public transport and general commuters and I thank them very much for their patience during the eight month construction period.”
“The input and cooperation Council received from local community members has helped us achieve a great result with the new Tooway Bridge.”
The pedestrian boardwalk will be completed by early next year and McDonald Street will remain closed until all works are finished.
