Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said taking part in regular physical activity was important for everyone’s health and statistics showed that unfortunately most Australians weren’t getting the required recommended physical activity they needed.
“One of the key targets of council’s Sunshine Coast Social Strategy 2015 was for the region to maintain its ranking as the healthiest in Queensland and the Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors program is a step in the right direction to achieving this,” Cr McKay said.
Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said since the launch of the Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors program in 2016, there had been numerous testimonials and feedback from community members thanking council for providing an opportunity for them to improve their wellbeing.
“We heard from our hinterland residents asking for the program to extend its coverage and I am happy to announce three new strength and stability low-cost classes for seniors have started at Beerwah, Gheerulla and Nambour,” Cr Rogerson said.
“Once again, council has partnered with professional fitness instructors to provide specialised activities that support seniors to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
“Seniors who have already been participating in the Healthy Sunshine Coast program are also reaping an improved sense of wellbeing by being connected to their community.”
The Australian and Queensland governments, through the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, provided funding to Sunshine Coast Council to deliver the additional Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors classes.
