National Volunteer Week (May 9-15) is a time to recognise the valuable contribution our volunteers make to the region.
On May 11, Sunshine Coast Council will do just that when Mark Jamieson launches the inaugural Sunshine Coast Volunteer Expo at Lake Kawana Community Centre.
Mayor Jamieson said the people of the Sunshine Coast have a remarkable history of active involvement in community life.
“Council’s adopted Social Strategy set a target of increasing the contribution of community members volunteering within our region from one in five to one in four,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“The Volunteer Expo provides professional development and networking opportunities for the region’s dedicated volunteers.
“It’s also for those interested in volunteering to discover the benefits of giving back to their community.”
Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the Volunteer Expo falls within National Volunteer Week and this year’s theme is ‘Give Happy, Live Happy’.
“We’ll be celebrating that not only are our volunteers helping make the lives of others happier, they too are happier by giving back to the community,” Cr McKay said.
One dedicated local who has discovered the benefits of volunteering at Maleny Library since 2009 is Chas Morris.
Chas Morris JP said he would definitely recommend volunteering to anyone who is able to assist in any capacity.
“As a Justice of the Peace, I am one of a team who are involved with helping everyday people with documents that need witnessing or sworn oaths, he said.
“The amount of work we cover is constantly increasing and becoming more complex but fortunately the Queensland Justice Department keeps me all up to date. I am also very lucky that the Maleny Library assists me with this work.
“I receive a feeling of satisfaction in helping people who otherwise might not be able to understand the complexity of legal papers and also get to meet a lot of local people we would not meet in normal circumstances.”
