Sunshine Coast Lightning have made history by marching straight into the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final, following a heart-stopping one-point victory over the Melbourne Vixens in the major semi-final last Saturday.

As our region’s first national sport team, a special event will be held at Nights on Ocean, this Friday, June 9 at 6.45pm to celebrate the team’s momentous achievements.

Mayor Mark Jamieson urged the community to get behind our local team and show your support as they prepared for the Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final on June 17 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Boondall.

“I invite the community to join council in letting the Sunshine Coast Lightning know the whole region is behind them,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“We are proud of what the team has already achieved and the Nights on Ocean event will be the perfect opportunity to showcase our support and celebrate our Sunshine Coast Lightning team.

"One of the major benefits of being part of this ground-breaking new national competition is the impact it has had, and will continue to have, on our grassroots netball.

“A young girl playing netball fixtures here on the Sunshine Coast can not only dream of making it all the way to the national team without leaving home, they can make it happen.

“We can’t wait for the grand final game and cheering for the Lightning when they take to the court at Boondall.

“I know I can rely on the passionate Sunshine Coast community to show the Lightning that everyone is behind them as they prepare for their first Grand Final.

“Get involved and show your support by joining in on all the local events planned for the next few weeks, starting this Friday at Ocean St, Maroochydore.

"Get up close and personal with members of the team at Nights on Ocean at 6.45pm and be sure to show your colours by wearing yellow or your favourite Sunshine Coast Lightning shirt.

“Keep an eye out on council’s website for more ways to get involved and celebrate our region’s first national sports team’s success.”

Bronwyn Buksh, Executive Manager of the Maroochydore Revitalisation Association, which operates the Nights on Ocean Markets said there would be a number of exciting activities on the night from 6-10pm including games of the world, live acoustic performances and salsa dancing workshops in the street.

“Hosting the Lightning at Nights on Ocean will be a wonderful opportunity for our region to demonstrate their pride and support for the team,” Ms Buksh said.

“Our monthly markets generally attract between 6000 and 12,000 people, and is the perfect event to show the Lightning that everyone on the Sunshine Coast is behind them and wishes them the best of luck in preparation for the Grand Final.

“At Nights on Ocean, Lightning fans will also have the opportunity to secure the team’s official merchandise before the big game.

“We really want everyone to get involved and help us light the street yellow.”

The Vixens will play Giants this Saturday, to determine who the Lightning will play on June 17 to lift the grand final trophy.
