Sunshine Coast Council’s proposed new runway project is another step closer after being declared a significant project.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbot has welcomed the announcement by Deputy Premier Andrew Fraser.
"The expansion of the airport is a game-changer for the Sunshine Coast," Cr Abbot said.
"It will add $1.6 billion to the Sunshine Coast economy and create 5000 new jobs between 2016 and 2050.
"The world class aviation facility will connect Coast businesses to rapidly growing markets in China, India and beyond.
"This is about council delivering for the whole region."
Major Projects Portfolio Councillor Debbie Blumel said the decision is good news for the Coast.
"The project, including the $250 million East-West Runway, will energise the economy, improve safety and reduce the number of people affected by aircraft noise," Cr Blumel said.
"Today’s announcement is another major milestone and is reward for all the hard work done by council to get this expansion off the ground.
"The airport is a key plank of the region’s future and will deliver investment and jobs for generations to come."
The declaration means the State and Commonwealth agencies will work collaboratively through the statutory approval process.
Ultimately the project will require the approval of both the Queensland Coordinator-General and the Commonwealth Minister for the Environment.
The next step in the process will be the formal agreement of the State and Commonwealth to the joint oversight of the EIS process.
After that there will be a public exhibition of the draft terms of reference for the project.
A copy of the council’s Initial Advice Statement which has triggered the Coordinator-General’s determination of State Significance is available on council’s website.
