  • Friday 03 July 2015

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson and a number of Councillors are set to join civic and business leaders from more than 100 cities across the Asia Pacific and beyond in Brisbane next week to promote the Sunshine Coast's business, trade and investment opportunities.

Sunshine Coast Council is one of four major partners in the 2015 Asia Pacific Cities Summit & Mayors’ Forum (2015APCS) which has attracted representatives from more than 100 cities and over 1000 delegates.

Mayor Jamieson will join another 74 mayors who are collectively responsible for governing 122 million citizens from across the Asia Pacific and beyond.

An initiative of the Brisbane City Council, 2015APCS provides a platform for governments and businesses to engage on city governance and drive trade and investment opportunities.

Mayor Jamieson will chair a plenary session titled “Cities For People” on Tuesday afternoon with his fellow panellists including Tel Aviv Yafo Deputy Mayor Asaf Zamir, CEO of Acciona Infrastructure (Madrid) Luis Castilla and India’s Minister of State for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Babul Supriyo.

The session will discuss how administrations can manage urban development and population growth in a resource efficient and environmentally sensitive manner with a focus on improving people’s quality of life.

Sunshine Coast Council’s APCS exhibit will be officially opened by the Mayor on Monday.

During 2015APCS, Mayor Jamieson will take the opportunity to promote the region's economic credentials and investment opportunities, as well as introducing Sunshine Coast products and services to new export markets.

"The APCS is a fantastic opportunity right on our doorstep to showcase our outstanding region to an international audience - and this is exactly what myself and other councillors will be doing,” Mayor Jamieson said.

"Not only does it offer a highly informative program of speakers, but we will also be meeting with representatives of leading global companies to highlight potential opportunities and trade links with businesses on the Sunshine Coast.”

Lord Mayor of Brisbane Cr Graham Quirk said 2015APCS’ theme of Business and Leadership in the Asia Pacific would feature world-renowned speakers, presentations, a trade market square exhibition, and case studies that cover the new wave of innovation and global development.

“By hosting 2015APCS, Brisbane will again provide an international platform for discussion on issues that provide challenges and opportunities for our cities throughout the Asia Pacific region such as innovation, technology, and sustainability,” Cr Quirk said.

“Being a world city in 2015 means much more than looking after roads, rates, and rubbish, this summit is a vital opportunity for international cities to learn and benefit from each other’s experiences.

“We have some exciting speakers lined up including Chairman of the 2012 London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Lord Sebastian Coe, and digital entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling author Randi Zuckerberg, who is well-known for her association with Facebook.”
