Storm to play Tigers at Sunshine Coast Stadium
  • Tuesday 17 November 2015

Melbourne Storm will bring the NRL back to the Sunshine Coast for the first time in seven years after locking in a pre-season trial game against Wests Tigers at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Saturday, February 13.

Details of the match were announced today by Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson, who said bringing their “home” trial north was another indication of Melbourne’s growing commitment to the Coast.

Melbourne’s team is expected to feature many of the players who took Storm to the preliminary final stage in the recently completed NRL season, while it will be the first ever appearance on the Coast for the Tigers.

Kickoff will be at 5pm with Storm’s Intrust Super Cup feeder teams – Sunshine Coast Falcons and Easts - and its Coast-based NYC under-20s squad to play in curtain-raiser matches from 2.30pm

“The Sunshine Coast is truly becoming Storm’s home away from home and we can’t wait to see Craig Bellamy’s team here in action in front of their growing Coast membership and supporter base in February,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“We’ll also make Jason Taylor and his Tigers feel very welcome as they step up their preparations for the new season.

“It’s going to be a big night for everyone here who loves their footy.

“The last NRL trial on the Sunshine Coast was back in 2009 when Melbourne beat the Broncos so I’m sure the appetite to see a match of this level in their own backyard will be there with our region’s league fans.

“We have tickets going on sale from 9am tomorrow. My advice would be to get in early to not miss out on the opportunity to see some of the best players in the game.”

Both clubs are scheduled to hold open training sessions at the stadium on Friday, February 12 while Melbourne will also host a Billy’s Buddies clinic for kids and a Community Day at Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club, Sunday, February 14 from 10am.

“As a club we are looking forward to visiting the Sunshine Coast again, this time bringing a trial match to the local community who have a real appetite for rugby league,” Melbourne Storm Football Director Frank Ponissi said.

“Not only are we looking forward to playing the match at Sunshine Coast Stadium, but also running an open training and beach session during our three-day visit.

“This trial game against Wests Tigers will be an important part of our preparation in the lead up to the 2016 season and provide a number of players the opportunity to stake a claim for positions ahead of Round 1.

“I’m sure we will see plenty of our loyal Queensland based fans out in force in what will be a great day of league with all Storm’s grades on show.”

Melbourne’s decision to play a pre-season trial on the Coast strengthens the ties which began when Storm signed a three-year partnership agreement with the Sunshine Coast Falcons in the Intrust Super Cup ahead of the 2015 season.

They headed north for a four-day camp prior to their round 26 NRL blockbuster against the Brisbane Broncos in September and have also decided to relocate their Storm Academy and Holden Cup NYC under-20s program to Sunshine Coast Stadium.
