The St.George Queensland Reds will host reigning Super Rugby champions the Chiefs in their second and final trial game of 2013 at Stockland Stadium Sunshine Coast on Friday 8 February.
This will be the second straight year Queensland Rugby has taken the Reds to the Sunshine Coast after the region hosted an exhibition match against New Zealand’s Hurricanes in June.
“I am very happy the Sunshine Coast is being given the opportunity once again to host a Queensland Reds game,” Mayor Mark Jamieson said.
“The code has a good following here on the Coast, as evidenced by the attendance at the Reds-Hurricanes game earlier this year.
“I look forward to the event on February the 8th.”
Council’s Economic Development (major events) portfolio holder Jason O’Pray said rugby union was become increasingly popular on the Sunshine Coast.
“In addition to the Reds match we will have the British Lions visiting Noosa next year,” he said.
Cr O’Pray said the Coast was having a good run on securing major events at present.
“We have just announced the great Tough Mudder event which will bring thousands of people here,” he said.
“I am unashamedly going for every major event for the Sunshine Coast region.”
The Sunshine Coast trial game will be a crucial hit-out for the Reds before their Super Rugby campaign commences a week later with a blockbuster opening round clash against the Brumbies in Canberra on February 16.
Reds Head Coach Richard Graham said the chance to host the 2012 champion Chiefs would be a good opportunity to challenge the squad just prior to the season kicking off.
“It’s crucial we hit the ground running when Super Rugby begins with our opening two matches against the Brumbies and Waratahs extremely important Australian Conference affairs,” he said.
“So, what better way to prepare ourselves than to host last year’s champions on the Sunshine Coast just nine days before our first competition game.
“They’ll be extremely eager to maintain their momentum of last season for round one and will use that as motivation throughout the trials and heading into the beginning of the season.
“The opportunity to play and perform well on the Sunshine Coast is also something the team is excited about after having received such a positive response and support from the community during last year’s exhibition game.”
Tickets for the encounter can be secured through Ticketek's website.
