For the first time, Sunshine Coast Council will showcase a select collection of artworks from previous Sunshine Coast Art Prize winners in a unique pop-up style gallery.

The major prize winning artworks from the past three years are now on show at the Audi Centre Sunshine Coast showroom at Currimundi until June 15.

The artworks form part of the Sunshine Coast Art Collection, and this pop-up gallery is a first for exhibiting these artworks outside of the Caloundra Regional Gallery, council offices or libraries.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said it was an exciting new council initiative to make the prestigious collection more accessible to the public via unique locations.

“We recognise the emerging quality of the region’s art collection and see real value in sharing it with the community,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“For those who may not frequent locations where artworks have previously been exhibited, the Audi dealership in Currimundi offers a new opportunity.

The initiative is testament to the growing acclaim of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize as a national contemporary acquisitive art award. This year it has attracted the Audi Centre Sunshine Coast, as a new major sponsor which led to the creation of the pop-up gallery.

“Council is thrilled to have Audi Centre Sunshine Coast join the Art Prize as a co-sponsor of the Major Prize and we look forward to working closely with them to further develop this great art award,” Mayor Jamieson said.

Audi Centre Sunshine Coast dealer principal Richard Moye said Audi was excited to be on board as a major sponsor of the Art Prize and be part of the new pop-up gallery initiative.

“A long-term supporter of the arts nationally, Audi's partnership with the Sunshine Coast Art Prize connects the brand with audiences who appreciate innovation, excellence, technology and style,” Mr Moye said.

“For Audi Centre Sunshine Coast, it makes sense for us to support the Art Prize, regional arts development and provide a unique exhibition space for the pop-up gallery concept.”

The pop-up gallery of Sunshine Coast Art Prize previous winners 2013-2015, will be exhibited at Audi Centre Sunshine Coast, 686-692 Nicklin Way, Currimundi from April 13 to June 15, 2016.

The Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016 prize pool is now more than $35,000 including:

  • an acquisitive Major Prize of $25,000 cash sponsored by Sunshine Coast Council and Audi Centre Sunshine Coast, plus an artist studio residency sponsored by Montville Country Cabins
  • a non-acquisitive Highly Commended Prize of $5000 sponsored by Proost-De Deyne family
  • a non-acquisitive People’s Choice Prize of $2500 sponsored by Caloundra Chamber of Commerce.

The Art Prize has already attracted more than 300 entries from local and national artists and online entries close at 5pm on Friday, April 15.

The Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016 exhibition is to be held at Caloundra Regional Gallery from August 18 to October 2. The winning artwork will be acquired into the Sunshine Coast Art Collection.
