Council is encouraging residents living in the Noosa coastal area to take advantage of a fantastic garden wheelie bin service.
The service, which has been operating for the past 18 months, has proved so popular it has now been expanded to include additional properties within the coastal stretch from Peregian to Tewantin.
Residents taking advantage of the service will receive a lime lidded 240-litre wheelie bin, which can be filled with grass clippings, weeds, leaves, light pruning and small palm fronds. Council’s new waste management contractor for the Northern region, TPI Cleanaway, then conveniently collects the bins from the footpath fortnightly.
“During the summer growing period the volume of garden waste placed in wheelie bins increases substantially” Council’s Environmental Health Manager (North), Wayne Schafer said.
“When mixed with other waste it is not possible for council to recycle this vegetation. This valuable resource is lost and it consumes precious landfill space.”
The service is more environmentally efficient for one contractor using a large waste collection vehicle to collect this waste rather than individual residents transporting their garden waste to the landfill.
It provides an opportunity for residents to assist in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, fossil fuel consumption, exhaust emissions from cars, methane gasses from landfill and extend the life of landfill.
“This service will also save some residents from having to own a trailer just for transporting garden waste to the landfill, not to mention save valuable time on weekends and save on vehicle running costs on trips to the landfill,” Wayne said.
The service is available to domestic, commercial and industrial premises at a cost of only $65 per year, less than the cost of a trailer registration.
Property owners or their authorised agents can arrange a service by contacting Mr Gary Dolton at Council’s Tewantin Office by email email@example.com or phone 54495262.
