Sunshine Coast Council will hand over the running of the Maleny Hinterland Visitor Information Centre to a local tourism association later this month.
The Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast Association will manage the day-to-day operations of the centre from 19 January 2010.
Division One Councillor, Anna Grosskreutz said the partnership arrangement between council and the Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast Association came into being following council’s decision, as part of an internal review, not to renew the centre’s lease back in July 2009.
“Following the announcement not to renew the centre’s lease, the Hinterland Tourism Association were determined to do what it could to keep this important service open for visitors,” Cr Grosskreutz said.
Under this agreement, council will continue to pay the rental and outgoings and the Hinterland Tourism Association will manage the centre’s operations including the coordination of it's volunteers.
“This is a great win-win partnership arrangement that will see the centre remain open and the Hinterland tourism industry more involved in its future,” Cr Grosskreutz said.
“The Hinterland Tourism Association is to be congratulated on their proactive determination to keep the centre open.”
Bob Morrow, President of the Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast Association said the continued operation of this centre will benefit Hinterland Tourism well into the future.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Sunshine Coast Council and its staff on this, at times complex, process,” Mr Morrow said.
“We especially welcome all new and existing volunteers working with us on this exciting project. Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast would like to thank the staff and volunteers for their contribution in the past and we look forward to working with the staff and volunteers from the other visitor centres across the region.”
