Sunshine Coast Airport celebrates the completion of its new four lane entrance road that will be opened to traffic on Monday in time for the Christmas holidays.

At a celebration today to mark the completion of the new airport entrance road, Sunshine Coast Airport General Manager Peter Pallot described the new $6.3million four lane access road into the Sunshine Coast Airport, as a much needed and timely infrastructure project that will benefit both residents and visitors to our region.

“Monday’s opening of Runway Drive represents a milestone achievement for the airport and the community that it serves. The implementation of another stage of the airport’s master plan ensures that we continue to provide for our community today whilst we plan for the needs of tomorrow.

“With over 900,000 people travelling through the airport last year and 1.9 million expected by 2020, it’s important that we develop new infrastructure like the road to manage this growth into the future,” he said.

Mr Pallot said the impressive new gateway reflected the feel and diversity of the region while also ensuring the safety of all commuters in and out of the airport.

“It also brings the benefits of increased safety and accessibility to the airport and the many businesses located within the Runway Drive Estate,” Mr Pallot said.

“I’m sure we will all be glad to see the end of the holiday traffic snarls which have been such an inconvenience over the past few years at the old Friendship Drive intersection.

Mr Pallot said the success of the new access road at Runway Drive was a result of close co-operation over the past two years between the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the Department of Main Roads.

“This project demonstrates how Local and State Government departments can work together to deliver a major piece of road infrastructure not only on time but on budget and with a fantastic Sunshine Coast look.

“When Runway Drive opens from the scheduled time on 8pm Sunday night 14th December, the former airport access via Friendship Avenue will be closed off.
