Sunshine Coast Council’s planned burn at Racecourse Road Bushland Reserve, Meridan Plains will take place tomorrow from 10am to 6pm, weather permitting.
At 20 hectres, this is Council’s largest burn scheduled for this planned burn season, and as a result it will create a large amount of smoke, which will be visible from Caloundra Road.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting light winds in the morning, turning light to moderate NW in the middle of the day and NW-N in the late afternoon. This is ideal to minimise smoke impacts on Caloundra Road, the Bruce Highway and Caloundra.
The planned burn will create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas in the park, help to reduce the amount of forest fuels on the ground and the intensity of any subsequent bushfires.
It will also provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.
The community has been alerted via social, signage at the entrance to the Industrial Estate and direct mail.
Smoke can decrease visibility on the roads so it is important that motorists drive safely to the conditions.
A final site and weather assessment will take place in the morning.
