A field of around 6000 runners and walkers are expected to hit the streets in ideal conditions for the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon and its associated events on Sunday.

The 2015 Marathon, which has Sunshine Coast Council as one of its sponsors, was officially launched today at Alex Surf Club with Mayor Mark Jamieson joining some of the elite runners as well as those who are racing for fun, fitness and to raise important funds for charity.

"The 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon is part of a portfolio of events that every other region in Australia would be very envious of," Mayor Jamieson said.

"We have an outstanding list of both land and water events that we continue to add to and grow.

"The Marathon is definitely one of those growth stories.

"Because of the Marathon, more than $10 million injected in to the local economy in the last three years and, just as importantly, more than $500,000 has been raised for local community groups."

In Sunday's field will be around 700 competitors tackling the full marathon course which starts and finishes at the Alex Surf Club.

Last year's winner Andrew Kimanthi, of Kenya, was at today's launch and is confident of his beating his time of 2 hours 20 minutes and 32 seconds from last year.

Racing will get underway at 6am and also includes the McDonalds Half Marathon, Westpac 10km, Love & Partners 5km and the Queensland Government 2km.

Ben Roberts-Smith, VC, MG has joined the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon as an event ambassador and will be running the 10K event with Sunrise presenter Eddy Bartholomew.

Former State of Origin star Billy Moore will be in the half-marathon field.
