Sunshine Coast Council yesterday approved the staging of the Maleny Community Precinct, allowing council to move the works program forward.
Sunshine Coast Community Policy and Programs portfolio holder and division five councillor Jenny McKay said both council and the community were keen to see work start on the site.
“The indicative overall staging plan and a short-term three year staging plan were developed as part of the master planning process,” Cr McKay said.
“Council is now ready to progress the three year staging plan, known as plan 1A, including the development of the walking trail between the Maleny Riverside Precinct and Gardiners Falls, and the provision of access to the lower sports field area.
“It also includes conserving Pattemore House, the development of the first nine holes of the golf course and moving Barung into the area, as well as planting, weed control and area maintenance.
“The Maleny Community Precinct Advisory Committee is very excited and supportive of the stage 1A plan.”
Cr McKay said that a big consideration going forward is how the works on the site will be funded.
“A significant component of this year’s council budget will be spent on detailed design work but most funds will go to the construction program itself,” Cr McKay said.
“Any land sales that would have originally funded some of the work will be put on hold for 6 to 7 years due to the current economic climate.
“As for the remainder of the site, council will be looking at a tripartite partnership with the state, the community and council being the main players.
“And I know that the Maleny community are already looking at some innovative ways to fund the precinct.”
The Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan was adopted in June 2010.
The staging of the Maleny Community Precinct was adopted at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on Wednesday 6 October 2010.
