Local youth invited to get involved and make a difference

ImageYoung people from all walks of life have been invited to get involved in the Speak Up Engage program run by Sunshine Coast Council.

Speak Up Engage is a youth engagement and development initiative that has been developed by young people for young people.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the current Speak Up Engage participants had worked alongside council for the past 12 months to design the 2017 program.

“The new program will offer project management experience, free formal professional and personal development training and mentoring opportunities,” Cr McKay said.

“One of the key benefits of being involved in this unique program will be working with council staff to create a new Youth Action Plan that that will identify the needs, experiences and interests of young people and shape how we support young people in to the future.

"We are looking for registrations from interested young advocates who want to be a voice for young people on the Sunshine Coast.

“If you are aged between 12 and 25 and want to make a difference in your community, then council’s Speak Up Engage program wants to hear from you.”

Program participant and 2017 Sunshine Coast Young Citizen of the Year Jak Hardy said it's hard to find a place where young people can make decisions but that's just what council’s Speak Up Engage offers.

“It's so exciting to be a part of making change happen in the world's best region and to have a say in how the Sunshine Coast is built and brought together,” he said.

“It's been an incredible learning experience, where friendships are formed and skills are developed, and one that I can't recommend highly enough."

There are limited spaces available on the 2017 Speak Up Engage program and it is easy to get involved. Simply complete the online registration form. If you are under 18, you will need permission from your parent, guardian or carer to participate.

Registrations close 5pm on February 24, 2017.
