The Lightning have began to build links with the Sunshine Coast community, with coach Noeline Taurua and several players on hand at the SunCoast Lynx netball trials.

Taurua was joined by Lightning squad members Madeline McAuliffe, Cara Koenen, Stephanie Wood and Laura Scherian as more than 100 netball players from around the region took part in the tryouts.

The players assisted the coaches with the training drills and offered advice on how to progress to netball’s elite level.

Lightning goal attack and Sunshine Coast local Stephanie Wood knows exactly what the young players are experiencing, having to progress the long way to reach the national level.

Her hard work has paid off, playing in the ANZ Championship the last two years and recently making her debut for the Diamonds.

“I tried for many, many years to get to the ANZ (Championship), I got knocked back several times,” Wood said.

“If you don’t make this team next year it is not the end of the world. I know it may seem like it, it’s not, I personally think setbacks make you a better player, a better person.

“My advice would be to seek feedback… then you can go back and work on these things to improve.”
