Since the launch of Sunshine Coast Council’s interactive library Corners in November 2012 over 27,000 local under eight year olds and their families have enjoyed exploring creativity through play.
The Corner has landed at six libraries across the Sunshine Coast. These highly popular and interactive children’s spaces featuring arts-based activities centred on the ‘learn through play philosophy’ are now at Caloundra, Kawana, Maleny, Maroochydore, Nambour and Noosa.
Each Corner features arts-based programs, activities and collections, curated around a theme that will enliven and renew children’s spaces. Children are engaged in a range of language, sound and play activities.
The Look! Picture Book Corners, provided by the State Library of Queensland are operating at Nambour and Noosa libraries, with varying themes initiating curiosity and play for children while using all of their five senses.
An all new Look at Me! Corner installed at Maroochydore Library features a retro designed kitchen to encourage children’s imagination and role playing. Caloundra Library hosts the Animalia Corner which invites children to explore a forest which is home to the stump cubby.
Children visiting the Kawana and Maleny Libraries will find themselves frolicking in a fun-loving Circus Circus theme. In the Circus Circus Corner at Kawana Library children through imaginative play can walk a tightrope, crawl through the magic tunnel, throw the balls in the clown face or imagine what it is like to be a performer in the circus. Imaginative play is important for children as it helps the child to understand the way other people behave.
Council’s friendly staff will be available from Monday to Friday to encourage children to learn through play, story, song and games. Of course parents are also invited to join in the fun and games with their children at one of the following locations:
9.30am to 11.30am; 2.30pm to 4pm
