Landmark day for Maroochydore CBD

The long-term future of Maroochydore took a giant step forward today with the Sunshine Coast Council taking ownership of the Horton Park Golf Club land.

Mayor Bob Abbot said this is a landmark day for the Sunshine Coast and the future of the region’s central business district.

"It’s official, council now owns the Horton Park land in Maroochydore," Mayor Abbot said.

"Council has worked closely with the Horton Park Golf Club over the past six months to achieve this outcome, with the land transfer agreement being forwarded to the State Government for their approval and gazettal prior to Christmas.

"The transfer of the land from the golf club to council has been gazetted today."

Mayor Abbot said this is an extremely positive step forward for the local economy.

"Having ownership of the land now allows us to proceed with the marketing and investment development of Maroochydore along with the job creation that is so important for the region," he said.

"Further, it will build the confidence needed to proceed with the overall development of the Maroochydore town centre, allied infrastructure and the associated jobs that go with business expansion and new investment."

Horton Park Golf Club President Geoff Davies agreed that the transfer of the land was a positive outcome for Maroochydore, the region, the club’s members and council.

"This is a win-win outcome for everyone involved," Mr Davies said.

"The agreement struck with council last year provides certainty for future development of Maroochydore and for the club with members being able to play golf on the current site until June 2014.

"Throughout this process council has worked collaboratively with the club to achieve long-term positive outcomes for our members and the wider community.

"There are exciting times ahead for Maroochydore, the Sunshine Coast region and the golf club members, and we are now focused on building our new course at Bli Bli."


The agreement to secure the long-term future of the Club and the Maroochydore town centre was negotiated between council and the golf club’s board in August 2011.

The agreement was endorsed by club members on 20 September 2011.

The key provisions of the agreement are:

  • $42 million in compensation for acquisition of the land and disturbance costs associated with HPGC’s development of and relocation to the new golf course site.
  • Continued occupation of its current Maroochydore site until 30 June 2014.

Having ownership of the land allows council to accelerate the marketing and investment development of the Maroochydore CBD along with job creation that is so important for the region.

Under the current timeframe, council will gain full access to the existing Horton Park site in July 2014 enabling works to commence for the new Maroochydore CBD. In the interim, additional soil testing and survey data will be gathered while the golf course is still in use, with mutually agreed timeframes with the Horton Park Golf Club to minimise disruption to play on the course.
