Aussie first fishing guide inspired by Sunshine Coast

Some of the Sunshine Coast’s best natural wonders have been showcased in a new Australian-first fishing book for kids.

Pelican Waters youngster Hailey Paxevanos has teamed up with her dad Rob, who is the host of WIN Television Network’s Fishing Australia program, to create an instructional fishing book that was inspired by the Sunshine Coast’s picturesque fishing and recreation spots.

Eight year old Hailey said her book, titled “Kids Fishing” was inspired by her love of fishing and the outdoors.

“Fishing is the best fun and I would love to help lots of kids get into it and care for our fish and the environment along the way,” Hailey said.

Rob Paxevanos said he was extremely proud of Hailey’s ideas and efforts in putting the book together.

“Hailey just loves fishing and she caught her first fish on national television at the age of 18 months from her pram! Since then she’s developed a real flair and interest in the sport, regularly out-fishing her older siblings and others around her – and she has the fishing trophies to prove it!” he said.

“The book was her idea and when we started looking into it we realized that there’s no guide on market that helps kids and parents from the start in ‘kid’s speak’.

“We loved her idea and engaged parents, kids, and experts from many fields to help her make the book user-friendly, fun and informative. It also helps families avoid the all too common pitfalls that can make catching a fish near impossible.

“‘Kids Fishing’ was conceived, photographed, designed and printed on the Sunshine Coast. It includes information and instructions on collecting baits, casting games, easy knots, how to catch popular fish species and much more. There is also a big focus on sustainable fishing and best practice catch and release techniques.

“But more than anything it was just fantastic to be able to showcase and explore our magnificent Sunshine Coast in making this book and now sharing our natural wonders with kids right around the country.”

Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the new book was an exciting opportunity to showcase the Sunshine Coast’s great natural assets.

“Earlier this year Rob took millions of television viewers throughout the country on a terrific journey around our region’s top fishing spots on the Fishing Australia program and it’s wonderful to see young Hailey following in her dad’s footsteps as a true ambassador for the Sunshine Coast,” Cr Dwyer said.

“Fishing is the most popular outdoor recreation activity in South East Queensland so this book has the potential to provide more tremendous exposure for our region to kids and their parents round around Australia.

“Hopefully people will love what they see in ‘Kids Fishing’ and will put the Sunshine Coast on their future travel plans.”

A public book launch and fishing expo to celebrate the release of the ‘Kids Fishing’ will take place at Pelican Waters Tavern on Saturday 17 September from 12pm to 5pm and at Kawana Waters Hotel on Sunday September 18 from 12pm to 5 pm.
