Join the dots during Library and Information Week

If you love your library, make sure you head into your local branch and join in the great range of activities to celebrate Library and Information Week from Monday, May 19 to Sunday, May 25.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Library and Information Week is an annual event to promote the value of reading and literacy, the importance of Australia's book industry and the role of libraries in our community.

“This year’s theme is ‘Join the Dots’ and our eight library branches have planned a fantastic program of fun activities and events to showcase the wide range of services on offer,” Cr McKay said.

“So this is your chance to find out everything you need to know about your local library.

“Whether you are young or not so young, there is an event to suit anyone. You can trace your ancestry, celebrate National Archaeology Week, attend an internet for beginner’s session or adults can unleash their creativity with craft activities.

“Children don’t miss out as they can join in the National Simultaneous Storytelling events on May 21 when thousands across Australia will read the much-loved book Too many elephants in this house by Ursula Dubosarsky.

“You can even discover your virtual library where you will learn how to access eBooks and audiobooks via the Sunshine Coast eLibrary website links. You will learn what to look for in an eBook reader and which one may suit you. You will gain hands-on help to get you up and reading on your mobile device.

“Or you can simply head along for a nice informal morning tea and chat with your local librarian.

“There will be a ‘Join the Dots’ quiz competition where you will discover the treasures in your library and win some great prizes. Entries open 9am on May 1 and close 5pm on May 30.

“So make sure you take this opportunity to celebrate Library and Information Week and head along and join in the celebrations.”
