Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson yesterday joined family, friends and supporters of teen pilot Lachlan Smart at Sunshine Coast Airport to farewell him ahead of his incredible Wings Around the World journey.

Lachlan, a Sunshine Coast local, is aiming to become the youngest person to fly solo around the world in a single engine aircraft. The journey will cover almost 24,000 nautical miles and cross 20 countries on five continents, all before he turns 19.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said council was proud to support young innovators like Lachlan.

“Lachlan is an outstanding example of the innovative and adventurous youth we have in our region today,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“He is undertaking this mission to spread a message of achieving high goals through adversity and show that there are no limiting factors to what a person can achieve.

“Just getting to this point is an amazing achievement and has brought an enormous amount of positive publicity to the Sunshine Coast.

“Council has contributed $30,000 towards Lachlan’s venture and we are honoured that he has chosen his home airport as his departure and return point.

“The Sunshine Coast community has embraced this young aviator thanks to his courage and determination, and I’m sure they will keenly follow the flight with great interest.

“On behalf of all of our residents, I wish Lachlan well and look forward to welcoming him home as our newest world record holder.”
