Fulfil all those wonderful New Year’s resolutions and join in Sunshine Coast Council’s Active, healthy Sunshine Coast programs to improve your health and wellbeing.
Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Active, healthy Sunshine Coast is an initiative funded by the Australian Government in partnership with national organisations such as the Heart Foundation.
“It is well known that having good physical and mental health improves your wellbeing and has benefits for the whole community,” Cr McKay said.
“Active, healthy Sunshine Coast offers an extensive range of programs to choose from to suit all ages and levels.
“There are over 70 free Heart Foundation Walking groups across the region each week which is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the Sunshine Coast while making new friends.
“If there isn’t a Heart Foundation Walking group in your area, we are always looking for volunteer Walk Organisers to start new groups on the Coast.”
Councillor McKay said low-cost Heart Foundation Heartmoves classes run in Caloundra, Maroochydore, Nambour and Cooroy and allows participants to exercise at their own pace in a fun and friendly group environment.
“Heartmoves is a gentle physical activity program suitable for anyone who has not done any exercise in a while, and is designed to be safe for people with stable long-term health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and bone or joint problems,” she said.
“Exercises can even be adapted for those with special needs or done in a chair.
“Perhaps the Lift for Life resistance training program classes are just what you are looking for to kick start your fitness levels. Lift for Life classes are also low-cost and run in Nambour and Cooroy.
“We are very excited to have brought the free global community-running phenomenon, parkrun to the Coast in late 2012 with over 50 runners and walkers weekly completing the beautiful 5 kilometre route in Kawana.
“We would also love to hear from volunteers who would like to start parkrun groups in other locations in the region.
“You can improve your wellbeing – every day, your way with Active, healthy Sunshine Coast.”
