How do you spend your Sundayze?
  • Thursday 10 May 2012

Get your pen and mark your diary – the 2012 schedule for the much anticipated Sundayze Series is out now.

This year’s calendar will see six individually themed, free community events run from June to August at various locations across the coast.

Council’s Civic and Community Events Manager, Danielle Burns said the Sundayze Series events are a great way to enjoy Sunshine Coast’s perfect winter weather.

"This year’s program features a range of entertainment styles including jazz, opera, comedy, country, retro/rock’n’roll and relaxed island beats – so there’s sure to be something to suit everyone’s taste," Ms Burns said.

"The events are free to attend, so pack a picnic, gather your family and friends, relax and enjoy an afternoon at some of the region’s stunning parklands and venues."

The series kicks off at the idyllic Maroochy Botanic Gardens with the smooth sounds of cool jazz. The Sundayze Jazz in the Garden, will run from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday 10 June and looks set to be a crowd pleaser.

"If you need further incentive to get along to this free, family-friendly community event, the headlining act will be the popular Brisbane based Caxton Street Jazz BandCaxton Street Jazz Band. The afternoon will also feature an array of local jazz groups from south east Queensland, a jumping castle and face painting for the kids as well as a variety of food and beverage stalls," Ms Burns said.

"The second program in the Sundayze Series, Opera in the Park, will be held on Sunday 24 June, from 2pm to 4pm, at the beautiful Nelson Park, Alexandra Headland and will feature some fabulous talent provided by Operatif.

"The Majestic Theatre at Pomona is the ideal venue for the third Sundayze event, Comedy Laugh Out Loud*, which will be held from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday 8 July. Headlined by the very funny Dave Callan and supported by Fiona McGary, Troy Kinne and James Tinneswood, the afternoon of free comedy is sure to warm you up on a cold winter’s day but make sure you bring a jacket – and don’t forget to book.

"Unlike our outdoor venues, the Majestic Theatre has limited seating which will be allocated on a first in first served basis so register your interest online via the What’s On Events page on council’s website

"The fourth Sundayze event for the season - Funky Fusion - will deliver some soulful RnB sounds at Turner Park, Beerwah from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday 22 July.

"Russell Family Park, Montville will be the perfect setting for Rockin’ Retro and will be held from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday 12 August. Rockin Retro will feature local Happy Day Rockers rock and roll dancers, a special guest MC and an energetic performance from band Captain Wow who will belt out a fantastic mix of old time classics from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

"To cap off the 2012 series, the final event will have a relaxing Island Beatz theme on Sunday 26 August at Eleanor Shipley Memorial Park, Moffat from 2pm to 4pm.

"So if you’re looking for something to do on a Sunday during winter, take a look at the Sundayze program – you’ll be pleasantly surprised."
