Sunshine Coast Council will consider a $90,000 three-year sponsorship proposal for the Queensland Home Garden Expo at Nambour to ensure the home grown event continues to flourish as the state’s biggest green thumb gathering.
The sponsorship proposal was considered this week by councillors at the Organisational Performance Committee Meeting. It will now be considered by the full council at next week’s Ordinary Meeting.
The annual three day Home Garden Expo has been held at the Nambour Showgrounds since 1984 and has grown into one of the country’s top garden expos, attracting more than 20,000 garden lovers each year.
Economic Development and Council Entrepreneurship Portfolio holder, Cr Lew Brennan, said council’s support would ensure the event continues to grow and evolve as Queensland’s top home and garden expo.
“The expo is one of the coast’s most successful home grown events that has gone from strength to strength over the past 25 years,” Cr Brennan said.
“It provides an important platform for local home, garden and lifestyle exhibitors to showcase their products and services to an audience of more than 20,000 visitors each year.”
Council’s proposed three-year sponsorship contract with event organisers Nursery and Garden Industry Qld is for the period 2010 to 2012.
“With the expenditure for visitors, exhibitors and support personnel for last year’s event reaching $7.37 million, the expos play a crucial role in boosting tourism and strengthening the local economy,” Cr Brennan said.
Cr Brennan said council’s sponsorship of the expo was part of its long-term strategy to support and retain events of economic significance in the region.
“The expo is one of our biggest events on the coast, and council’s support will ensure it remains here on the coast and continues to successfully grow and evolve into the future.”
The 2009 Queensland Home Garden Expo will be held on 10-12 July 2009.
