Sunshine Coast Councillor Anna Grosskreutz has just completed her first heritage tour to see the region’s cultural heritage sites in action.
The tour was part of Cr Grosskreutz’s new role as council’s Cultural and Heritage Portfolio holder.
Cr Grosskreutz will chair a Cultural Heritage Reference Group charged with deciding how the $800,000 generated by the new Heritage Levy will be spent across the region.
Her tour took in the Nambour and District Historical Museum, Buderim Historical Society, Discover Eumundi Museum, Cooroora Historical Society, Noosa Museum and the Cooroy Mill Precinct.
“I was impressed with the collections and the knowledge of those working in the Coast’s heritage sector, and intend to visit the rest of the region over the coming months,” Cr Grosskreutz said.
“As well as seeing all the great work being done, I also gained some insight into the challenges facing this sector.
“The main concerns are lack of storage space for the collection and the need for more volunteers.”
Expressions of Interest are now being called for the Cultural Heritage Reference Group who will provide expert advice to identify of priorities for the allocation of revenue generated through the Heritage Levy.
The Reference Group will work to raise the profile of cultural heritage in the region and support the development of a regional network of individuals, organisations and museums in the heritage sector. It will consist of representatives of council, historical societies, cultural and heritage groups and associations, business, tourism and the community.
This important voluntary position is for 12 months. Interested people should have a demonstrated commitment to cultural heritage and an ability to contribute to the identification of needs and opportunities for region’s cultural heritage. Experience in the heritage sector, business, tourism or marketing would be well regarded.
Applications for membership close on Monday 30 August 2010. A nomination package including information on the role of the reference group and selection criteria can be obtained by contacting Cultural Heritage Curator Olivia Robinson on 5472 0222 or by
