Healthy Sunshine Coast delivers improved health and wellbeing benefits

Since the launch of council’s Healthy Sunshine Coast in 2016, thousands of participants have reaped the benefits of improved health and wellbeing by attending a range of free or low-cost classes across the Coast.

One of the Healthy Sunshine Coast partnerships provides TAFE Queensland East Coast Certificate III and IV in Fitness and Diploma of Sport Development students an opportunity to share their knowledge and passion at boxing fitness classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the TAFE Queensland East Coast Mooloolaba Campus.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council had received plenty of positive feedback since the launch of the Healthy Sunshine Coast program in 2016.

“The partnership between council and TAFE Queensland East Coast has been a win/win for both students and participants,” Cr McKay said.

“The TAFE boxing fitness classes have been conducted by students in their final semester under the supervision of their qualified teacher.

“Each week we receive glowing feedback from the participants saying they are loving the classes and are starting to see real results.”

One of the participants attending the Healthy Sunshine Coast and TAFE Queensland East Coast boxing fitness classes, Angel Sutton from Maroochydore, was keen to share her own personal success story.

Angel Sutton said her TAFE Queensland East Coast studies as an Apprentice Chef had highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“Learning about the importance of combining a healthy diet with exercise has certainly made a difference to my health and wellbeing,” she said.

“Encouragement from my family also prompted me to attend the free Healthy Sunshine Coast boxing fitness classes.

“I find the TAFE students extremely professional and really look forward to attending each week.

“I am really happy with my progress as I have so far lost 13kgs since changing my lifestyle two months ago.

“The boxing fitness classes are a great workout and I feel as though I'm a lot more energetic after each session. This is particularly important so I can maintain a work/life balance during my studies.”
