Have your say on dogs in Caloundra Central Park sports precinct
  • Thursday 17 October 2013

Sunshine Coast Council invites the community to have a say on proposed changes to the management of animals in the local laws in and around the Caloundra Central Park Sporting precincts.

Feedback can be provided between 18 October and 1 November 2013 on council’s proposal to introduce a local law amendment to prohibit animals from the following sites:

  • Caloundra Central Park Sports Precinct, situated in Arthur Street, Caloundra
  • Caloundra Cricket Ovals, 2-14 Lewis Street, Caloundra
  • Caloundra Croquet Club Greens, 78 Arthur Street, Caloundra.

Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the proposed changes stemmed from growing concerns from local residents, sporting groups and users of these sporting precincts about the impact and risks posed by dogs off leash.

“A number of safety concerns have been raised with me about the use of these sporting areas by owners exercising their dogs both on and off leash and the conflict this causes with the primary purpose of these fields for sport,” he said.

“The Caloundra Central Parks Sports Precinct, Caloundra Cricket Ovals and The Caloundra Croquet Club have never been designated as dog off leash areas and because of the large number of sporting groups, children and adults now using the sporting facilities, it is important for council to consider the use of these area and the best strategies necessary to manage their use.

“The proposed changes include detailed maps indicating where the new animal management laws will apply and ensuring accessibility and connectivity is not lost for dog owners wishing to pass through the precinct.

“Council’s decision at today’s Ordinary Meeting will enable the community to provide their feedback on the resolution and for council to consult with the community on the proposed changes.

“All submissions and feedback from the community will be considered and will help inform a report back to council for review and discussion scheduled for December this year.”

The opportunity to submit feedback and to find out more about the proposed changes to Subordinate Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2011 is available online. Feedback on the amendment can be made from 18 October to 1 November 2013 online or by completing a hard copy submission form available from customer contact centres.
