It is no secret that bullying is a pressing issue in today’s society. Whether at school in the playground, or at home on the computer; unfortunately bullying is something many children have experienced.
The powerful stage production I am Jack will address this issue and take you on a journey at Council’s Lake Kawana Community Centre on Tuesday, May 19 at 10am and 12.30pm.
Based on the inspiring novel by Susanne Gervay about her own son’s experiences with bullying and brought to the stage by the multi award winning Monkey Baa Theatre Company, I am Jack is an excellent one man show which explores the often overlooked insidious taunting and teasing that bullies are so adept at inflicting on their victims as well as the roles that family and schools can play in responding.
In the story, every day Jack wakes up, has breakfast, gets dressed and goes to school, just like anyone else his age. The only problem is, when Jack arrives at the gate he’s faced with relentless bullies who refuse to leave him alone. Jack needs help.
With Jack’s mother being too wrapped up in herself as well as her new boyfriend, and Jack’s teacher, Mr Angelou being too busy to pay attention to the warning signs, the bullies remain a big problem in his life.
However, things start to improve when Jack discovers the use of self- expression through photography and begins to make sense of his world, his relationships with others, and most importantly, with himself.
Jack will take you on a touching and sometimes comical journey as he moves from being a victim to a victor. The production is very popular among schools and has had great success in the USA in 2014. This show is definitely not one to miss.
Susanne Gervay is an award winning author of children’s and young adult literature. Susanne is also a specialist in child growth and development, a teacher and lecturer.
