I’m pleased to advise local division 5 residents there’s an extensive breadth and variety of projects on the cards for the year ahead that will benefit our many diverse communities, thanks to council’s 2016/17 capital works budget.
From maintaining and enhancing green open spaces and environmental assets to keeping residents safe and connected when on our roadways and pathways, you’ll soon start seeing the many improvements rolled out across our region.
By mid-2017, visitors will be able to enjoy an educational experience at the new Discovery Centre at our much loved Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, with an elevated viewing platform and boardwalk, and meeting theatrette.
Once finished the $4.5 million renewal will better deliver on the Thynne sisters’ desire to conserve and exhibit the Reserve’s stunning flora, fauna and scenery.
Local parks are also in the spotlight, with a big focus on popular Montville Russell Family Park which has exciting changes ahead as a $100,000 detailed design plan is prepared for construction the following year.
Streetscape works will continue in both Margaret St, Palmwoods and Main St, Montville, with $400,000 and $180,000 in funding allocated respectively.
And of course funding allocated towards the resealing and pavement rehabilitation of the division’s roads will also be put to good use, with 34 roads receiving treatment.
Local residents wanting to keep active and healthy will also be happy to hear valuable investment is being made into many of the local sports centres and facilities including an electrical upgrade ($30,000) at the Palmwoods Briggs Sports Oval; replacing the pool filtration systems ($15,000) at Palmwoods Aquatic Centre; upgrade to the half pipe at the Maleny Skate Park ($35,000); and an upgrade to Nambour/Woombye District Sportsground ($150,000).
Our four-legged friends have certainly not been forgotten, with $1.6 million allocated to construct the new animal pound facility at Sippy Creek on schedule to be completed by October this year.
