Migrant Work Ready program

I was very proud to hear recently that our region’s Migrant Work Ready Program is setting a high standard across the nation. The program is a collaboration between Council, Nambour Community Centre, Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce, Solbar, TAFE Queensland, Volunteering Sunshine Coast and Services Australia.

This program recently won the Multicultural Australia category in the National Awards for Local Government.

The program aims to boost the skills and confidence of Sunshine Coast migrants seeking employment in the local community.

It’s great to see 47 migrants have graduated from the program so far – which is now in its third year.

When businesses employ a diverse workforce, it benefits the business, its employees and customers, through increased productivity, creativity, a wider range of skills and improved cultural insights.

Yandina celebrates

On Tuesday 22 September I joined with community groups, local businesses and traditional owners as we gathered together to celebrate the 150th birthday of the first gazetted town on the Sunshine Coast - Yandina. Yandina is part of my Division 10 and the community celebration was a great example of how our region values our heritage.

The celebration centred around Railway Street Park and paid tribute to past generations and made a declaration to future generations.

There was the ceremonial sealing of a time capsule to be opened in 50 years and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque which is mounted on a significant Mount Ninderry Rock.

Congratulations to all past and present residents of this great town that has a very bright future.

Yandina is a very popular part of the Sunshine Coast and has many wonderful attractions for visitors to enjoy. If it has been a while since you last visited, there is no better time than now.

Have your say - Healthy Sunshine Coast 2021

Our Healthy Sunshine Coast program remains on a break and will be back with a fresh new program of activities and events next year. I know that I am looking forward to seeing what the next program includes. Council is seeking your input on what activities you prefer.
