In handing down its budget today, the new Sunshine Coast Council indicated an $8 million component for key tourism and economic development projects across the Sunshine Coast.
Economic development portfolio councillor, Cr Lew Brennan said that an important component of the budget is making sure we have a healthy economy that sits within our strategies for a sustainable future.
“It’s great to see the continuance of economic development projects that are already in place across the three former shires, particularly in the light of reduced regional programs from the federal government.
“The challenge will be to keep our focus on local projects, while ensuring that our regional economy gets a broader base than it currently does,” Cr Brennan said.
Council has allocated funding for key tourism and economic development projects:
- Council land development $4.575m
- Tourism organisations $2.618m
- Tourism events $476,000
- Clever Networks project $210,000
- Economic development projects $180,000
- Connecting the Coast
The program sees the continued delivery of a competitive open access broadband infrastructure across the Sunshine Coast to help facilitate city standards of service within a regional area for a competitive cost.
- Sustainable Business for a Sustainable Region
The program sees the identification, co-ordination and facilitated delivery of business support services to ensure the ongoing survival of local business in a competitive global market.
- Destination Marketing and Management
In partnership with the local tourism industry, Council’s efforts in this area are aligned to attracting visitors, maximising their local spending and enticing them to inform their friends and family about our wonderful region.
- Major Economic Event Facilitation
Events such as the Coolum PGA, Mooloolaba Triathlon and the Coates Rally Championships attract valuable visitors during the traditional quieter periods of the visitor cycle.
- Rural Enterprise Facilitation
Hinterland success is directly linked to the vibrancy of its local economy and work continues to ensure this major asset of the Coast retains its unique character.
- Policy and Partnerships
Council continues to partner with key industry, government and community groups to ensure that all parties are signed up for the future vision for the economy.
- Caloundra City Enterprises
Caloundra City Enterprises and the trading entity Sunshine Coast Enterprises, is an independent economic delivery arm working in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council, government and business.
