Mayor Mark Jamieson joined Terri Irwin for the inaugural Barefoot Breakfast today, on a sandbank at low tide in the Maroochy River at Cotton Tree.
The occasion was a fundraiser for Australia Zoo's charity-run Wildlife Warriors and its Wildlife Zoo, with local eateries the Boatshed and Arnica laying on a gourmet breakfast to help dislodge donation dollars from the pockets of the near-100 barefooted guests.
"Inspired by the memory of Steve’s mum Lyn Irwin who was a pioneer in wildlife care and rehabilitation, the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital is dedicated to saving native species," Mayor Jamieson said..
"It was Lyn’s dream to establish a wildlife hospital, but not realised until after she died. The hospital opened in 2008 and has treated more than 52,000 animals to date."
Mayor Jamieson also announced council would be donating $50,000 this year and the following two years toward running of the Wildlife Hospital. The Mayor also mentioned council's ongoing commitment to preserving land for wildlife, with a reminder that council had in the last two years spent nearly $6 million from the Environment Levy on more than 350 hectares of land purchases at Verrierdale, Ilkley and Cambroon.
