Mayor Mark Jamieson has sent his congratulations to Bindi Irwin after the inspirational 17-year-old from the Sunshine Coast won the 21st season of Dancing With The Stars in the United States this afternoon.
A crowd favourite throughout the series, Bindi enchanted the judges and the audience with her final emotive dance routine for the season, receiving a perfect score of 30 with her dance partner Derek Hough.
Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter also received a perfect 30, while US Army hero Alek Skarlatos scored a 27.
However, the viewer votes combined with the judges’ scores gave Bindi the overall title.
“I know there are many thousands of Coast residents who have watched Bindi’s progress in the US with great interest and we’re all very proud that she has succeeded to such a high level,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“She’s gone outside her comfort zone and shown once again how immensely talented and dedicated she is.
“On this occasion, not only has Bindi shown she’s a fine dancer, with exceptional style and grace, and entertained millions in the US, she’s been able to build on the legacy of her father and highlight the outstanding work she, Terri and Robert, and the rest of the Australia Zoo team undertake right here on the Sunshine Coast.
“She’s also spread some very important conservation messages to a huge audience.
“I’m sure we’ll have a big party for her once she comes back home and we’d love to see Derek on the Coast sometime soon as well to add to the around 14,000 visitors we’ve received from the US in the last 12 months.”
Bindi is expected to return to the Sunshine Coast next weekend for her brother Robert's 12th birthday on December 1.
Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, whose division includes Australia Zoo, said Bindi’s victory was a “remarkable achievement”.
“She’s not just won Dancing With The Stars, Bindi’s won our admiration and our hearts,” Cr Baberowski said.
“She constantly shows tremendous commitment and determination to be her best, and recognise the best in everybody around her.
“We should be so pleased we have such a remarkable ambassador for this region and the next generation.
“Bindi’s performances on Dancing With The Stars have been inspiring and captivating, and by gaining the world’s attention, she continues the Irwin family legacy.”
