Sunshine Coast Council today endorsed a new busking program for the region at the Ordinary Meeting of Council as recommended by the Service Delivery Committee last week.
Lisbet Dean, Regional Director Community Services, said the program aims to produce a seamless process of application for buskers with clear guidelines for performing at defined busking locations.
“A working group across council, in consultation with a number of business operators and busking professionals, has developed a new framework and guidelines to establish one unified busking program for the Sunshine Coast,” Ms Dean said.
“The working group has identified 25 suitable busking locations across the Sunshine Coast and plans to increase the number of locations as the program develops.
“Additionally, up to 50 uninsured buskers holding a busking permit and operating in the locations specified by council can be covered by council’s public liability insurance.”
The permit application fee is $20.00 (until July 2009) with no charge on permits for buskers under the age of 18. Approved applicants will receive a buskers permit together with a copy of the ‘Busking Operational Guidelines’ and will be required to adhere to the ‘Buskers Code of Conduct’.
Policy and program portfolio councillor Jenny McKay said a unified busking program will support and value the diversity buskers contribute to the cultural life of our community.
“The progress of a busking program on the Sunshine Coast will help tremendously in building a positive community and will assist social, economic and arts development for the Sunshine Coast,” Cr McKay said.
From September interested applicants can apply for a busking permit by contacting council on 5475 8501 or visiting Council’s website.
