The business community has received an early Christmas present with the Sunshine Coast Council agreeing to a three-year sponsorship commitment for the Sunshine Coast Business Expo and the Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Awards.

Economic Development Portfolio Councillor, Lew Brennan, said the outstanding success of both events, which help promote businesses and business excellence on the Sunshine Coast, inspired Council to make the long term commitment.

"Council has a strong commitment to supporting and nurturing business on the Coast," Cr Brennan said.

"Our sponsorship of the Sunshine Coast Business Expo and the Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Awards is a practical demonstration of our dedication to recognising and supporting the growth of small-medium sized businesses in the region and to accelerating our region’s business success.

"Most people would be surprised to learn that of the 32,000 or so businesses in the region, 99.5% are classified as small or medium sized.*

"These businesses form the backbone of our economy and they deserve our support."

The 2011 Sunshine Business Expo will be held on 30 to 31 March with the Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Awards staged later in the year. Cr Brennan encouraged local businesses to be part of the Expo.

"Next year’s Business Expo is much more than just a showcase for products. The Expo is an environment for sharing information, promoting innovation and celebrating creativity and good old fashioned hard work," Cr Brennan said.

Organisers of the Sunshine Coast Business Expo and the Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Awards, the Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce, welcomed Council’s decision to support the long term future of both events which in turn, supported business growth in the region.

President of the Chamber, Myles McNamara said council had joined a long list of high profile sponsors who all recognise that small and medium sized businesses are the driving force behind the Sunshine Coast’s economy.

"Council’s leadership in taking a three-year position provides us with the ability to plan ahead to make these important occasions even more successful," Mr McNamara said.

"It also provides a level of certainty to encourage other sponsors to come on board.

"The Expo provides a perfect opportunity for local businesses to promote their goods or services to a broad audience. We have a number of repeat exhibitors for the 2011 event who have returned their initial investment handsomely by way of increased business over the past 12 months."

Council joins a number of high profile sponsors for the Sunshine Coast Expo including platinum sponsor Telstra Country Wide. Other Sponsors include Bendigo Bank, the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital, Savills, Pacific Motor Group, the University of the Sunshine Coast, Camelon I.T, Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE, Sunshine Coast Grammar School, Queensland Government (Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation) and media partners Hot 91.1 FM, Zinc 96.1FM, Seven Local News and the Sunshine Coast Daily.
