Sunshine Coast Council has endorsed the introduction of three new animal exclusion areas within the Central Park sporting precinct in Caloundra to improve the safety of the sporting public.
An amendment to the subordinate local law will apply to prohibit animals from the following sporting sites within Division 2:
- Caloundra Central Park Sports Precinct, situated in Arthur Street, Caloundra
- Caloundra Cricket Ovals, 2-14 Lewis Street, Caloundra
- Caloundra Croquet Club Greens, 78 Arthur Street, Caloundra.
However, dog owners will be able to traverse through these areas with their dogs on a leash.
Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the changes derived from concerns from sporting groups and users of these sporting precincts about the impact and risks posed by dogs.
“The Caloundra Central Park Sports Precinct, Caloundra Cricket Ovals and The Caloundra Croquet Club have never been designated as dog off leash areas and because of the large number of sporting groups, children and adults now using the sporting facilities, it is important for council to consider the use of these areas and the best strategies necessary to manage their use,” he said.
“A number of concerns have been expressed to me regarding these areas being used by owners exercising their dogs both on and off leash and the potential health and safety conflicts this poses to users of these fields for the primary purpose of sport.
“Community consultation was undertaken between October and November with the submissions received demonstrating that dog owners are using the sporting precincts as both on and off leash exercise areas.
“Consequently, the consultation process highlighted a possible need for a dog off leash area. Dog off leash areas across the region are currently under review by the Community Services Department.
“The primary objective of this amendment to the subordinate local law is to ensure the fields used by residents and visitors for sporting activities are not compromised as a result of conflict with animals. However, as the maps indicate dog owners may still pass through the grounds providing their dogs are on a leash and under effective control at all times.”
Informative signage will be installed at each access point to the sporting precinct indicating the changes and the amendment to the animal management local law will come into effect on Friday 20 December 2013.
