It’s National Volunteer Week (May 9-15), a time to recognise and celebrate the tremendous contributions of our Sunshine Coast volunteers.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said this year’s National Volunteer Week theme is ‘Give Happy, Live Happy’.

“Our volunteers have a really positive effect on our communities and, what’s more, they tell us that they are also reaping the benefits,” Cr McKay said.

“Research shows that volunteering makes people healthier and happier and can lead to better physical and mental health.

“Australia was ranked the ninth happiest country in the world according to the latest World Happiness Report and I think that the Sunshine Coast’s fantastic army of volunteers are some of the happiest in Australia.

“National Volunteer Week provides an opportunity for council to acknowledge the generous contribution of our region’s volunteers.

“Council’s adopted Social Strategy set a target of increasing the contribution of community members volunteering within our region from one in five to one in four.

“To help achieve this target, council provides a range of free professional development and networking opportunities for the region’s dedicated volunteers—like the Sunshine Coast Volunteer Expo on May 11.

Sunshine Coast Council coordinates a range of volunteering opportunities covering a wide variety of interest areas.
