Families and bike riders of all ages and abilities are invited to celebrate the opening of Mooloolaba’s new separated bikeway – and enter the draw to win a $200 bike voucher – at a community event on Saturday 6 February at 8-10am.
The official opening includes a barbecue breakfast, free face painting, live music and roving entertainment, as well a prize draw for people who cycle along the route.
Division 4 Councillor Chris Thompson said the event would showcase the bikeway, which provides a safe cycling route between Minyama and Mooloolaba.
“People of all ages are already enjoying the ride along the bikeway,” Cr Thompson said.
“It’s the first of its kind for the region, so we’re inviting everyone to come along for a ride and see how a separated bikeway really provides a safer, easier route.
“It’s also a great opportunity for people to take a look at the new streetscape, which has improved the look of the whole area, and visit the nearby shops.”
Transport portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowksi said the two lane bikeway contributed to closing gaps in the Coastal Pathway, which provides safe cycling routes between Coolum and Caloundra.
“This is a significant asset for the region, as the number of bike riders is continually increasing,” Cr Baberowski said.
“Some have the misconception that this facility is for high performance road cyclists, but it actually provides a safe route for all cyclists including families, commuters, school children and recreational cyclists.”
This multi-million dollar project is jointly funded by council and the State Government under the Cycle Network Grants Program.
