The Sunshine Coast’s latest business confidence survey has yielded a positive result with businesses more confident than they were when previously surveyed earlier this year.
Now in its fourth year the Coast's own business confidence survey, sponsored by Sunshine Coast Council, regularly attracts hundreds of business respondents to its biannual survey. As a consequence the survey has become the premier benchmark for business conditions across the Coast.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the survey results are a glimmer of optimism in what has been a difficult couple of years.
“It’s tough out there, and businesses across the entire Sunshine Coast have been hurting,” he said.
“While the past six months have not lived up to the business community’s expectations entirely, the outlook for the next six months is the best it has looked for a while, with a greater proportion of businesses expecting stronger results.
“Planned capital investment and expectations of greater staffing levels and profitability are all also higher than six months ago.”
There is still some way to go however, with price pressures from customers and rising overheads and utility costs remaining the major constraints to business growth, the Mayor said.
“Each time the survey is conducted it tackles one of the big topics facing the business community, with the latest survey focusing on digital technologies within the Sunshine Coast business community,” he said.
The survey showed that 86% of local businesses have an active website, and a quarter of those are using the website to transact online with e-commerce facilities.
More than 50% of survey respondents have a LinkedIn profile and over 50% indicated they have Facebook page dedicated to their business.
Only 16% of businesses have an active blog and 13% use apps in their business.
The biggest barrier to fully embracing digital technologies in their businesses is a lack of time and/or staff to dedicate to it (53%), followed by a lack of technical skills (31%) and a lack of understanding of the possibilities (26%).
