There will be no way over Tooway Creek at Moffat Beach this weekend (5 and 6 June) while Sunshine Coast Council prepares for essential bridge replacement works.
Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said Buccleugh Street and Elizabeth Street will be closed to all through-traffic for the entire weekend while council installs a temporary one-lane bridge beside the existing structure.
“Following this installation, while council prepares the approaches to the temporary bridge, the old bridge will reopen,” Cr Dwyer said.
“The temporary bridge is expected to be opened to traffic on 23 June.”
Cr Dwyer said the temporary one-lane bridge will be under traffic signal control at all times and will be open to traffic as much as possible – however regular delays are expected.
There will also be certain times where traffic control will close the bridge, for example, when the crane is lifting units into place on the new bridge.
It is anticipated that the new bridge will be completed by late November 2010.
Community notices and message boards will be used to encourage motorists to use the Nicklin Way as their main travel route unless specifically needing to access the Tooway Bridge area.
“I'm pleased to see this project about to commence,” Cr Dwyer said. “Tooway Bridge is a vital link in our road network and its replacement is essential.
“The proposed November completion date is a result of the consultation council has done with the community. Their desire to have access across Tooway throughout the project has defined the construction timeframe.”
Cr Dwyer said he encouraged residents to use alternative routes whenever possible to ease congestion and avoid delays.
“I thank the community for their input and efforts to date and I also want to thank residents in advance for their patience and understanding during the construction period. I trust the end result will go some way to making up for the inconvenience we face over the coming months.”
