Sunshine Coast Council today announced Lucas Salton as the successful artist selected to design and construct the prestigious 2015 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award trophy.
Lucas, who has 20 years of national and international experience in the arts industry, transitioned from glass blowing to a public art and design consultant seven years ago.
He said his design for the award would capture the beauty and the spirit of the Sunshine Coast and its community.
“It is an absolute honour and a pleasure to be chosen for the design of the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards trophy,” Lucas said.
“And I want to ensure that it truly reflects this community and the environment in which we live.
“So the trophy, which will be made of glass and sit upon an anodized alloy base, will include vibrant colours set inside a sphere to represent the unity of our coast line, hinterland and everything in between.”
Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award winners will receive their beautifully designed award at the Awards Ceremony, hosted by Mayor Mark Jamieson on January 23, 2015.
Mayor Jamieson said the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards provided an opportunity to publicly recognise and honour the achievements of citizens who had made an outstanding contribution to the region.
“Residents are being asked to nominate individuals and organisations in our community that work to make the region a better place,” Cr Jamieson said.
“There is no doubt these people are our local heroes because they make such a difference to life on the Coast.
"It is important that we not only celebrate their contribution on Australia Day but also publicly acknowledge them via a formal, highly respected, awards program.
“And a trophy from a well-known and respected local artist is the perfect way to create a lasting memory of that acknowledgement for each of the category winners.”
Nominations are being sought for the following categories:
• Citizen of the Year sponsored by Seven Local News
• Young Citizen of the Year sponsored by University of the Sunshine Coast
• Senior Citizen of the Year sponsored by Maroochy RSL
