Council’s work experience program provides students with the chance to gain on-the-job experience to complement their study.

Work experience helps students make informed decisions about your future and provides an opportunity to explore potential careers.

To be eligible you must be either:

  • a secondary school student who is at least 14 years old
  • a student studying a Certificate III or above with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
  • a university student.

Work experience placement requests must be linked to course requirements or school career education programs.

Students need to be covered for public liability and personal accident insurance by a recognised educational institution.

Placement duration is dependent on the type of student:

  • School – five days
  • Vocational / Registered Training Organisation (RTO) - 40 hours (5 x 8 hour days)
  • University – 96 hours (12 x 8 hour days).

There are a diverse range of work experience opportunities available at council, however availability is dependent upon the capacity of the business area.  Not all placement requests can be approved.

Work experience placements are unpaid. It is the students’ responsibility to arrange their own transport to and from the placement location.

If more applications are received than placements available, preference is given to schools and institutions within the Sunshine Coast area and to students residing on the Sunshine Coast.

Special Requirements

Some roles have special requirements such as the General Construction Induction (White) card, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or Working With Children (Blue) card.  It is the students’ responsibility to provide all requested special requirements.

How to apply

Applications are accepted via the on-line application form only.

Please note, a minimum of 6 weeks lead time is requested.
