Last year I completed a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Human Resource Management and minoring in International Business and Marketing at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
At the time that I applied to be the Procurement and Contract Performance Intern through Sunshine Coast Council’s My Summer Workplace program I was undertaking another internship. This had allowed me to really appreciate the importance of work experience and facilitation of practical learning. Additionally, I had previously identified the Sunshine Coast Council as an organisation that I would like to be a part of, and after reading the position profile for the Procurement and Contract Performance Intern I knew that this was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss.
During this internship I have been able to apply theory to practice and develop an understanding of processes related to procurement and contracts. Whilst this field is not a direct match-up to my degree, I have been able to align general business theory, as well as aspects of human resources with procurement. My supervisor, along with the Procurement and Contracts teams have all been very welcoming, inclusive and supportive and I am so grateful for my time with them.
I have now experienced various stages of the procurement process both inside and outside the office, and attended events that have strengthened my knowledge of the Sunshine Coast Council as a whole. The My Summer Workplace program is a great opportunity to gain real world experience and work within an organisation to achieve common goals.
